Street Photography

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

“My work is more like a letter. A Photograph is enclosed in the envelope. The envelope is sealed, a stamp is on it, there are only a couple of words on it: “Addressee” and “Destination”. It will be thrown into a postbox, but will the envelope reach the destination? And what destination will it be?

A Photograph is a letter with no destination to the future…”

Subjective Documentary

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

“Confront yourself with strangers.
Go into new situations.
Discover who you are.

It´s all about finding a balance between the environment and your place in it. To tell about the realities of the world through your own personal truths.”

Documentary Facts as Propaganda

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

“Objective documentary photography doesn’t exist.
The photographer who claims he approaches his subject objectively is naive. There is
always a political, personal or commercial interest.

There’s a thin line between documentary photography and propaganda.
In this workshop we will look for the power of the visual language of
propaganda-photography. What is the relationship between Martin Parr and Rodchenko?
When we visit places we will make a clear choice; positive or negative. We will
photograph our subject according to this choice using the techniques of propaganda.”

Documentary essay

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

“The word ‘documentary’, in relation to photography, sounds like a picture that tries to describe reality in a direct way, and perhaps to convey some kind of important message or story.

Yet at least in the European understanding, documentary photography is actually a quite subjective model. The documentary photographer is closer to an independent author, or perhaps poet.

The key is finding a way to make your ideas visual. So first you must have ideas. The famous war photographer Robert Capa famously said, ‘if your pictures aren’t good enough, you’re not close enough’ (meaning to the action). Another version, more relevant to documentary work, might be ‘if your pictures aren’t good enough, you’re not reading enough’. Or perhaps, ‘you’re not close enough to your subject emotionally’.

During the summer photopracticum, we will try to help each participant find and produce a personal photo series. We will discuss and develop the technical, creative, and conceptual aspects required for a successful result.”

Documentary design

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

“Documentary (editorial) design: IMAGE - TEXT - CONTEXT - PUBLIC SPACE

In general Visual Communication performs an important communicating role in society and may expand the social dimension of the urban experience. “Visual communication is not only about the design of a legible contextual image but especially also the method by which and the manner in which the image is brought to the notice of the person addressed…” and “Design may perform a communicating part in the ever-changing (European) society”. Designers, imagemakers are trained to perform a creative editing role in complex social environments. Thus designers and imagemakers may perform a bridging function between education, culture, economy and science. An exchange of knowledge and ideas and co-operation in the area of design, visual communication must be aimed at society.

We will research the possibilities and methods to lift up documentary photography in broaden (graphic) form. The term emphasizes the word DOCUMENT. The title of the workshop is IMAGE - TEXT - CONTEXT - PUBLIC SPACE.”

Visualization of Facts

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

“Visualization, in its broadest sense, implies a process of presenting any data in the form of an image for the maximum comfort of its comprehension, for rendering a visual form to any object, subject, process, notion, or event. Using photography for this purpose is one of the basic methods of visualization of life realities.

How can we ‘wrap up’ visual reality making use of photographic images? How do we reach the maximum adequacy between the meaning of the visual material and the observed real event? Is it possible to make a visual narration about an event of real life without being its immediate participant and witness?”
