Documentary photograph, one of the brightest Russian contemporary photographers, the author of projects devoted to Russian monumental propaganda and to the youth of the 80s-2000, grant holder of the Mayor’s office of Paris. Series of his works were exhibited at Moscow “Fotobiennale”, Month of Photography in Paris, Festival of Photography in the Netherlands and other events. Igor Moukhin started out in the mid 80s and became the first of those few Russian photographers receiving a response from western art-establishments. The received acclaim of the west was first of all for demythologizing soviet reality and genuine reflection of those underlying determining processes the USSR was undergoing during the 90s of the 20th century. Going beyond the traditional photo reportage Moukhin establishes himself as the main documentarian of one of the most complicated and significant periods in the Russian history, that of perestroika and post-perestroika period of state formation, springing up of new Russian reality and new Russian mentality.

“Confront yourself with strangers.
Go into new situations.
Discover who you are.
It´s all about finding a balance between the environment and your place in it. To tell about the realities of the world through your own personal truths.”

“Objective documentary photography doesn’t exist.
The photographer who claims he approaches his subject objectively is naive. There is
always a political, personal or commercial interest.
There’s a thin line between documentary photography and propaganda.
In this workshop we will look for the power of the visual language of
propaganda-photography. What is the relationship between Martin Parr and Rodchenko?
When we visit places we will make a clear choice; positive or negative. We will
photograph our subject according to this choice using the techniques of propaganda.”

“The word ‘documentary’, in relation to photography, sounds like a picture that tries to describe reality in a direct way, and perhaps to convey some kind of important message or story.
Yet at least in the European understanding, documentary photography is actually a quite subjective model. The documentary photographer is closer to an independent author, or perhaps poet.
The key is finding a way to make your ideas visual. So first you must have ideas. The famous war photographer Robert Capa famously said, ‘if your pictures aren’t good enough, you’re not close enough’ (meaning to the action). Another version, more relevant to documentary work, might be ‘if your pictures aren’t good enough, you’re not reading enough’. Or perhaps, ‘you’re not close enough to your subject emotionally’.
During the summer photopracticum, we will try to help each participant find and produce a personal photo series. We will discuss and develop the technical, creative, and conceptual aspects required for a successful result.”

“Documentary (editorial) design: IMAGE - TEXT - CONTEXT - PUBLIC SPACE
In general Visual Communication performs an important communicating role in society and may expand the social dimension of the urban experience. “Visual communication is not only about the design of a legible contextual image but especially also the method by which and the manner in which the image is brought to the notice of the person addressed…” and “Design may perform a communicating part in the ever-changing (European) society”. Designers, imagemakers are trained to perform a creative editing role in complex social environments. Thus designers and imagemakers may perform a bridging function between education, culture, economy and science. An exchange of knowledge and ideas and co-operation in the area of design, visual communication must be aimed at society.
We will research the possibilities and methods to lift up documentary photography in broaden (graphic) form. The term emphasizes the word DOCUMENT. The title of the workshop is IMAGE - TEXT - CONTEXT - PUBLIC SPACE.”
